    Die mexikanische Schriftstellerin Laura Esquivel wurde 1950 in Mexiko-Stadt geboren. Nachdem sie ein Studium der Theaterwissenschaften absolviert hatte, spezialisierte sie sich auf Theater für Kinder. Nach einigen Drehbüchern und Kindergedichten schrieb sie 1989 den Roman Bittersüße Schokolade , der wie der Film, zu dem sie ebenfalls das Drehbuch schrieb, ein weltweiter Erfolg wurde.
